Understanding What a Clients Wants
I find this to be the single most important thing when meeting with a potential client! If you don’t understand what a client wants then you already are counting on luck. Bottom line is you are addressing the needs and wants of said client. Why wouldn’t you want to know them and what they are looking for?
I purposely make a point to interview and talk with each individual that contacts me. Sometimes this is through a phone conversation, in person or a physical questionnaire. This is absolutely the best chance to be on the same page. It also works both ways, the potential client can get to know you and understand how the process goes, possibly see your studio and where you create. Doing the following will separate you from so many that call themselves photographers. Most importantly, you will have customers happy with results!
- Allow them to interview you and get a grasp of how you go about taking and editing photos.
- Listen to them and ask questions, especially if you’re not quite understanding their vision.
- Be honest with them when something just might not be obtainable and offer something close that you can do.
- Take away any unknowns that usually lead to being uncomfortable. Not only do they get to absorb this but it also makes them more at ease in front of your camera!
You can do a great job on almost every aspect and if you don’t know the clients wants or needs, then you are just treading water. This will make a difference along with your style and technical skills that got them interested in your studio in the first place!
